Foundation Learning

Do you want to:
Learn about work and jobs?
Go on a learning programme that helps you to build your confidence?
Develop a range of skills?
Have a personalised programme that is designed for you?
Improve your chances of finding work or further training?
Then Foundation Learning may be for you.

What is Foundation Learning?
It’s a learning programme that is made up of 3 areas that are really important to employers:
Learning about work – the skills you need to do a job
The skills you need to get on in work and in life
Practical English, maths and ICT – that you would use at work

Does it include work experience with an employer?
Some programmes include work experience. When you are ready, a work placement will be found for you. Here are just a few of the job areas that you might be able to learn about:
Business Administration

What else will I be doing?
You will work on a range of skills that will help you with your personal and professional life, such as:
How to work with others
Knowing what employers expect
Dealing with everyday problems

What about Functional Skills?
Functional skills help you to develop your ICT, Maths and English by showing you how these are linked to things that you do in your everyday life.
For example:
Researching a topic and choosing a suitable way to present this information (developing your English skills) __ Understanding pay slips and exploring costs linked to everyday life (developing your maths skills)
Producing posters using a computer (developing your ICT skills)

Will I get any qualifications?
You will have the chance to gain qualifications in the skills you are learning. They are called ‘Entry Level’ or ‘Level 1’ qualifications, but they don’t always involve taking exams and you can work at your own pace.

How long would my programme take?
It depends – it can take between 6 and 36 weeks depending on each individual.

What help will I get from Connexions?
While I am on the programme a Connexions Personal Adviser will be around to offer extra support with choosing a career path and to help you with your next steps.

What do I need to get on a Foundation Learning programme?
All you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop your knowledge and skills.
