School Leaving Age
Currently, young people cease to be of compulsory school age on the last Friday in June in the school year in which they reach 16.
However, the Government intend introducing new laws which will require all young people to participate in education
or training to the age of 17 by 2013 and 18 by 2015.
Under the plans, young people will not be forced to stay at secondary school until they are 18.
Participation can be at school, in a college, an apprenticeship or in other accredited training provided by an employer.
The new laws will first apply to pupils joining Year 7 in September 2008.
These changes will clearly affect the terms of employment of young people under 18 in the future.
