For young people brought up in urban environments, the thought of accessing the countryside is not something which has instant appeal.

But, getting over the suspicion and taking a challenge can and does lead to rewards.

Away from the telly and computer games, the countryside has an abundance of opportunities for young people to develop independence skills and enjoy some awesome scenery too.

Whether doing a major trekking expedition, abseiling, caving or just a simple countryside walk the ability to work effectively as a team is paramount.

Young people have to learn quickly that their own safety and other people in the team is something that must be taken very seriously. But, having agreed safe working methods ensures that everyone benefits from a very special activity.

During the summer, Connexions working in conjunction with Kirkby Employment & Education Project (KEEP) facilitated a hill-walking project which saw a number of young people visiting some spectacular hills and mountains in North Wales, Staffordshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. Young people participating had opportunities to learn aspects of map reading, route planning and how to deal with emergency situations.

If you know a group of young people from Knowsley who’d like to accept a challenge please contact Kirkby Connexions Centre on 0151 949 5700.
