Transport
Transport to school up to the age of 16
Local authorities are required to provide transport where it is necessary to ensure a child’s attendance at school. This applies to all young people aged up to 16 including those with special educational needs or disabilities.
Any enquiries regarding school transport should be first made to your local authority.
Transport to Further Education, Sixth Form, or Sixth Form College
If you are aged 16-18 or continuing on a course that you started before your 19th birthday and you are attending a Further Education course at a sixth form school, sixth form college or a Further Education institution, you may be able to get help.
For young people attending school over the age of 16, Each local authority has its own policy.
You can also enquire directly with the College, Sixth Form or Sixth Form College that you are applying for, and don't forget you can apply for Education Maintenance Allowance.
Transport for Students with a Learning Difficulty or Disability
If you have a learning difficulty or disability you may be able to get help with transport to and from college. This support is offered to students who are 19 and under but help may be available up to the age of 25. It can also depend on which college you are planning to study at. Transport may only be available to the nearest college if they can offer the same course and facilities. However, transport should not be seen as a barrier to accessing college and if necessary joint funding with other agencies such as the Learning and Skills Council could be considered.
You may also be able to get some mobility or independence training if you want to become more confident at using public transport. Your local councils Neighbourhood Travel Team will be able to help.
