Your Rights and the Law
You need to know your rights and responsibilities so that you know how to stay inside of the law and how the law can work for you.
Here are some examples of what you can or can’t do in the UK:
At 10 you are considered to be responsible for any criminal offence you may commit.
At 14 you can get a job, but you can only work for a maximum of 8 hours on a non school day (not Sunday); a maximum of 2 hours on a school day or a Sunday; and only for a maximum of 12 hours during a school week. In the school holidays you can work a maximum of 25 hours a week.
At 15 you can work a maximum of 35 hours per week in a school holiday.
At 16 you can get married with your parents consent, apply for your own passport, get a National Insurance Number and can get a full time job.
At 17 you can learn to drive, buy a car or a motorbike and be sent to prison.
At 18 you can open a bank account without your parents/carers signature, get married without parental consent, leave home without parental consent, purchase and drink alcohol in licensed premises, vote in elections or get a tattoo.
