Climate Change Champions
Overview Climate Change Champions competition – 20th September 2007 We are looking for nine outstanding young people, aged 11-18 to help send a message about climate change. The Champions will represent their area and England as a whole on climate change issues, and help spread the word to their peers. Defra provide the facts and support but ultimately they speak with their own voice.
The focus for this year’s competition is promoting behavioural change. Using any creative format they choose, contestants will be challenged to submit a news report, documentary or case study demonstrating: ‘How best you can encourage your friends, family, school or community to make positive steps to reduce their carbon footprint’ Full details and entry to the competition are available at www.climatechallenge.gov.uk and closing date for entries – 9th November 2007. Background to the 2006 Competition.
The first Climate Change Champions were revealed in May 2006, at 10 Downing Street, and met former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Soon afterwards, the Champions travelled by train in late July on a fact-finding trip to see how climate change is affecting the Chelenalp glacier, close to the Swiss/Italian border. Since then, the Champions have all been busy speaking at many events across England to help make sure people are aware of the risks of climate change in England and in other countries. They are now helping Defra find the next nine Champions for 07/08.
