Trends in Employment

Where do the young people of Merseyside work ?

The majority of young people on Merseyside aged 16 – 19 remain in education, some only for one year, many for longer. Of course many of these work part-time while studying.

In fact there are around 15,000 young people (age 16 – 19) in full-time employment on Merseyside and around 16,000 working part-time.

Employment on Merseyside of 16 – 19 year olds by type of work:

 Retail, hotels and restaurants  56%
Other Services (hairdressing, care, cleaning, etc.)  9%
Public Administration (local government, education and health)  9%
 Banking, Finance and Insurance  7%
 Construction  7%
 Manufacturing  5%
 Transport and Communications  2%

* Most of the young people who work part-time work in shops, hotels and restaurants. The numbers who work in these jobs full-time are similar to the numbers working in Public Administration, or the Financial Sector (banks, insurance companies, etc.).
